Definition

Supporting sentences are sentences that explain, develop, and support the topic sentence. They provide details that help readers understand the main idea of a paragraph.

Supporting sentences answer questions such as:Who?, What?, Where?, When?, Why?, How?

A good paragraph contains several supporting sentences that relate directly to the controlling idea in the topic sentence.

- Functions of Supporting Sentences

Supporting sentences can serve different purposes in a paragraph.

1. Explanation

QSupporting sentences can explain an idea or event in greater detail.

Example

When she was 10 years old, her family left their farm for economic reasons.

Purpose

To help readers understand why something happened.

2. Description

Supporting sentences can describe people, places, objects, or situations.

Example

They lived in a beautiful three-story castle in the middle of the forest.

Purpose

To create a clear picture in the reader's mind.

3. Reasons

Supporting sentences can give reasons for an action, opinion, or situation.

Example

Some people quit their jobs because of the difficult working conditions.

Purpose

To explain causes or motivations.

4. Facts

Supporting sentences can provide factual information or statistics.

Example

More than 10 percent of this university's student population is international.

Purpose

To make ideas more reliable and convincing.

5. Examples

Supporting sentences can give examples to clarify a point.

Sentence Fragment

A sentence fragment is an incomplete sentence.

Common Causes

  • Missing a subject

  • Missing a verb

  • Dependent clause standing alone

How to Correct

  • Add a subject or verb.

  • Join the fragment to a complete sentence.

Example

❌ Because they worry about job opportunities.

✅ Students do not often major in art because they worry about job opportunities.


Grammar: Avoiding Run-Ons

Run-On Sentence

A run-on sentence joins two independent clauses without proper punctuation or a connector.

How to Correct

  • Separate them with a period.

  • Add a coordinating conjunction (and, but, so, etc.).

  • Use a subordinating conjunction (because, although, though, etc.).

Example

❌ I went to Italy I did not visit Milan.

✅ I went to Italy. I did not visit Milan.

✅ I went to Italy, but I did not visit Milan.


Grammar: Avoiding Comma Splices

Comma Splice

A comma splice occurs when two independent clauses are joined only by a comma.

How to Correct

  • Add a connecting word after the comma.

  • Split the sentence into two sentences.

Example

❌ I went to Italy last summer, it was a great trip.

✅ I went to Italy last summer, and it was a great trip.

✅ I went to Italy last summer. It was a great trip.


        

                     My Perfect Travel Destination

        My perfect travel destination would be Japan because it is a beautiful and interesting country. I have always wanted to visit Japan due to its unique culture, modern cities, and amazing natural scenery. I think this country is a good place for me because I enjoy learning about different traditions and trying new food. If I traveled there, I would visit famous places such as Tokyo and Kyoto, see cherry blossoms, and taste traditional Japanese dishes. I would also take many photos and buy souvenirs for my family and friends. In addition, I would like to experience Japanese festivals and learn more about the local lifestyle. In conclusion, Japan would be my ideal travel destination because it offers unforgettable experiences and beautiful memories.
